To accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage and to put focus on sanitation, the Prime Minister of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October, 2014. The Mission Coordinator shall be Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) with two Sub-Missions, the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), which aims to achieve Swachh Bharat by 2019, as a fitting tribute to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which in rural areas shall mean improving the levels of cleanliness in rural areas.

                      SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Solid Waste Management is defined as the discipline associated with control of generation, storage, collection, transport or transfer, processing and disposal of solid waste materials in a way that best addresses the range of public health, conservation, economics, aesthetic, engineering and other environmental considerations.

 In its scope, solid waste management includes planning, administrative, financial, engineering and legal functions in the process of solving problems arising from waste materials. The solutions might include complex inter-disciplinary relations among fields such as public health, city and regional planning, political science, geography, sociology, economics, communication and conservation, demography, engineering and material sciences.

PATIALA CLUSTER

The Patiala Cluster MSW management project is currently in a process of Bidding. The total estimated MSW generation is 500 TPD for the Patiala. The MSW processing site (20 acres) has been already been marked at Dudal Village. The more information on bidding process is available @ e- tender Punjab

GMADA CLUSTER (Mohali)

The land acquisition (50 acres) for the Mohali Cluster at Samgoli Village (Derra Bassi) is in final stages of procurement. The total MSW estimation is is 450 TPD for the GMADA cluster. The MSW processing site (20 acres) has been already been marked at Dudal Village. The RFP for the cluster will be floated after fulfilling all the requirements.

Processing Plant at Bathinda

M/s JITF company the concessionaire at Bathinda MSW Cluster has put up Processing plant with capacity of 350 tons per day and converts the waste to RDF and to City Compost. The JITF has been carrying out Collection and Transportation of Municipal Solid Waste as per the agreement.

Processing Plant at Ludhiana

M/s A2Z Company, the concessionaire, at Ludhiana MSW Cluster has put up a RDF plant. At present, the plant is processing about 600 tons of MSW per day and producing about 150 tons of RDF daily. This RDF is being utilized in Nakodar Power Plant (which is bio-waste plant, where RDF is used as subsidiary fuel).

Compost plant at Jalandhar

The compost plant for Jalandhar MSW cluster at Jalandhar in the private sector has been revived and is running on trial basis. The processing plant after the successful trial is likely to start the production soon. It has a capacity to process 350 tons of waste daily.

Waste to Energy plant at Amritsar (processing capacity 650 tons per day)

The handling of municipal solid waste from Amritsar Cluster has been awarded to Essel Hitachi InfraProjects Ltd in 2016. The concessionaire is carrying out collection and transportation of MSW from the Amritsar city. The concessionaire has deployed collection machinery and resources to collect and transport the MSW. The waste to energy plant is to come up within 18 months and expected to produce 11 MW of electricity from MSW. The land for plant has already been handed over to the Concessionaire and DPR of the plant is under scrutiny. Likely date of commissioning Dec 2018.
