The Department of Local Government is responsible for various matters pertaining to the development of various cities and towns of the State. Its main functions are to direct, supervise and control the functioning of the Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Improvement Trusts in the State. The Department is also responsible for implementing various State/Centrally Sponsored Schemes through these Urban Local Bodies and other para-statals such as Punjab Water Supply & Sewerage Board (PWSSB), Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) and State Urban Development Authority (SUDA)
